Whitehaven Rugby League have announced the signing of Huddersfield’s Ronan Michael on a loan for a two-week rolling deal.
Ronan was the first Irish born player to enter into the Super League in over a decade when he made his debut last year. Ronan has also only been playing rugby since 2017, he will be looking to secure a place in the Irish squad for this year’s Rugby League World Cup after initially learning the game back at the Irish U17’s trials back in 2017.
Ronan is thrilled to have this spell at Whitehaven, he said: “I’m really looking forward to my loan spell at Whitehaven and I’m grateful for the opportunity. The championship this year is a very competitive one! I’m hoping to gain some game playing experience during the loan. Hopefully I can get out there soon with the boys and show what I’m about and learn along the way!”
Assistant Coach, Jonty Gorley said: “Ronan’s agent got in touch with us curious as to if we needed a middle with Marc Shackley being out for another four to six weeks. We thought it made sense to bring someone in. We looked at some videos of Ronan and certainly liked what we seen, he’s a young up and coming athletic front rower.
“Ronan carries the ball very well which will serve us well. Defensively he looks brilliant, so it will be good to see him in the chocolate blue and gold.”
Whitehaven RLFC Director, Ashely Kilpatrick added his thoughts: “We are delighted to have Ronan join us. I’d like to thank Richard Thewlis, Ian Watson and the Huddersfield Giants for allowing Ronan to come to us, I’d also like to thank Ronan’s agent Graeme Taylor who made the deal between both parties happen swiftly and professionally.”
Whitehaven RLFC look forward to their home clash against Bradford Bulls at the LEL Arena this Sunday at 3pm, fans can watch the match via the OurLeague platform.
