Saturday saw Whitehaven Rugby League travel to Oldham for round 5 of the 2021 Championship race, despite the wind and rain it was a successful and eventful trip for Haven.
Securing a try in the first half which led onto five in the second half, there was no stopping Callum Phillips who made his comeback following 5 weeks out, scoring four of the six tries.
Speaking post-match, Callum said: “I enjoyed being back part of it, it’s been a long 5 weeks out. Oldham is a tough place to go, but with our squad I think we should be confident every week. Four tries look good on paper but it’s on the back of our halves and fullback creating things, Tom Wilkinson’s work in the middle been outstanding as well. You don’t get a result like that without a team performance and that’s what Saturday was all about, team effort.”
Head coach Gary Charlton praised the team in his post-match interview, he said: “Belief was the biggest thing that came out of Saturday, the lads believed in one another and showed great teamwork which clearly led to our victory. Oldham came up with a few errors and we capitalised on them. Callum’s done very well, the more we put in the more we great results we will see.
The final score was Whitehaven 36 - 4 Oldham
Try scorers: Callum Phillips (4) Jessie Joe Parker (1) Liam Cooper (1)
