Bottom club Workington snatch late derby win despite early dismissal

Bottom club Workington overcame the eighth-minute dismissal of Karl Olstrum to snatch a sensational 30-28 victory over Whitehaven in the Cumbrian derby at Derwent Park.

Trailing 24-16 with four minutes left, Whitehaven thought they had secured a first win in seven matches when quickfire tries from John Paul Brocklebank and Grant Gore, both goaled by Brocklebank, put them 28-24 in front.

However, 12-man Town had one last chance to win it deep into stoppage time and Jason Mossop went over at the corner and Jarrod Sammut landed the touchline conversion - his seventh successful kick of the match - to break Whitehaven hearts.

Earlier John Patrick touched down in each half and Sammut also scored a try for a personal haul of 18 points, while James Newton, Andy Yates and Martin Calvert were Whitehaven's other tryscorers.
